DISCUSSA Nation Teeming With Elmer Gantrys
| 11/07/2007Yes, that was the sound of 148 televangelists all trying to get through to their lawyers at the same time yesterday morning as the faxes from the Senate Finance Committee sputtered into their headquarters.
For those of you who haven’t yet read about it in the Tampa Tribune (first to break the story), seen it on CBS News (first and most thorough in the electronic media), or pondered its implications in the Wall Street Journal, here’s what happened:
Senator Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican whose middle name is “Mr. Accountability,” concluded a two-year investigation of big “prosperity church” ministries with a few suspicions about whether the spirit of the tax code might be in peril. So he sent out letters requesting full voluntary financial disclosure to six of those organizations–three big ones and three not so big.
The headliners were Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland and his lovely wife Gloria, and Creflo Dollar and his exquisely named wife Taffi.
Less well known, unless you happen to subscribe to “Widow-Fleecing Monthly,” were Randy and Paula White, the couple whose Without Walls International Church in Tampa outlasted their marriage; Joyce Meyer and her loving husband David, of Joyce Meyer Ministries in Fenton, Missouri, who may have had to use their $23,000 marble-topped commode when they heard the news; and Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church of Lithonia, Georgia, who apparently made the list because of his healthy appetite for faith-based-initiative money.
Confused yet? We happen to know a few of the people at Trinity Foundation who did the nitty-gritty detective work on this, so we’ll lay it out for you:
There’s been a trend over the past 20 years for non-profit corporations, which are required to file reports with the Internal Revenue Service, to convert themselves into churches, which are not required to file anything.
Some of these churches have an appetite for Gulfstream jets, beachfront mansions, Bentleys and cosmetic-surgery funds. This is, of course, in conscious imitation of the Yuppie from Galilee.
People usually have one of three reactions to stories like this:
- So what? It’s fools taking money from fools.
- Yes, they’re greedy, but they still bring people to God.
- God helps those who help themselves. They’ve been blessed. (Admittedly, I don’t know anyone who believes this, but that’s sort of what the “prosperity gospel” is all about.)
All three reactions amount to “Let’s not get our panties all in a bunch about a few redneck preachers getting rich. We’ve got more important things to focus on.”
Unfortunately, it cuts a little deeper than that. The amount of information considered by the Finance Committee before starting down this road amounted to at least the suspicion of a vast criminal conspiracy. (And, lest you think I’m exaggerating, just check the interlocking directorates, shared board members, and shared jet leases of the top 50 or so players that the committee is looking at.) Some of these guys are little more than carnies. Others aren’t as self-consciously criminal but believe their own publicity—but they also know that they’re taking money intended for disaster relief, aid to the poor, and aid to orphans, and converting it into personal luxury items. If that’s legal, then the law should be changed. If that’s illegal, then there should be at least as much jail time for them as Martha Stewart got for lying to the SEC.
Considering the huge issues at stake here—Can the government demand accountability from a church? Can the government define what is and is not a church? Can a religious organization refuse to comply with requests for information on First Amendment grounds?—you might be wondering why Senator Grassley, not a stupid man, sent a mere six letters that have no real teeth to them. If the targeted evangelist were to pull a Bartleby-the-Scrivener and say “I prefer not to answer,” then theres no penalty for that.
But then these were not just any letters. These were very specific letters. These letters had the kind of specific questions that make you pucker up when you read them.
Imagine if you got a letter from Congress saying, “Do you have an AK-47 with serial number 43789467 stowed behind a toolbox in your garage? Please answer yes or no.”
They were those kind of questions. They were the kind of questions that give you the impression that perhaps the Congressman asking them already knows the answer. Hence the phone calls to the lawyers yesterday morning.
We’ll see how this plays out. My own prediction is that most will decide not to comply at all, and then the committee will move in the direction of subpoenas. That will throw everything into a political debate leading up to the 2008 elections, with Republicans asking, “Will this alienate evangelicals?” and Democrats, who actually run the Finance Committee, asking, “Are the Republicans bringing this up to make it look like we hate religion?” That will at least be the occasion for delays, but eventually hearings will be held, the head of the IRS will get pressure, lawsuits will be filed.

Wow! Strong mixed feelings! A big "yessssss!" to see the most egregious malefactors begin to sweat. (Maybe it will give them a faint wake-up call of what they could face at the Last Judgement.) Yet, also a big "Great! another stick for society to use to beat on Christians."
Still, I'm guessing plenty of Christians in legitimate ministries would gladly pick up a stick to give these clowns a whack ... but will wonder what the eventual fallout for our ministries will be.
And here's hoping that they won't start holding press conferences damming each other... when the PTL scandal kicked off, the on-camera tit-for-tat seemed to throw gasoline on the fire.

Believe it or not this is the babble and "spirituality" that is very very common place in the majority of Pentecostal and charismatic "churches" today. Believe or else! If you question what they are saying or if you question their behavior, you are a "Pharisee" or you are being judgmental. "Touch not the Lord's anointed" they say. Although we have no idea who it was that actually "anointed" the heavy hitters in contemporary Christendom, they have enormous influence over these gullible ones. It's no wonder that guys like David Coresh and Jim Jones were able to lead so many to a tragic end. Most of the "prophet's" and "apostles" of today are no different. Sadly, this is the extreme to which people will fall to when exposed to the brainwashing, false teaching and lies of these "anointed." actually it's laughable. . . . Forgive them, they know not what they do.

I'm not Pentecostal nor do I go to a charismatic church at this time, but I have had the privilege of serving in a number of churches over the years that stem from a variety of theological varieties and traditions(some charismatic and others mainline). The majority of charismatic churches that I have been to would peg this guy as a wackjob from the get go. The fact that you had to put the word "churches" in quotes after charismatic is telling. While pentecostal and charismatic churches can attract people like this guy or can provide a base of theology and emotionalism that crooked televangelists are famous for preying on and exploiting, Characterizing Pentecostalism or charismaticism by televangelists, David Coresh, or this wacko, is like characterizing the entire Anglican church by reverend Spong, or the folk syncratistic practices that are happening in the 3rd world. There just honestly there is no basis for doing so. Other than that I agree with the rest of your post.

Each of these folks were approached by their brothers in Christ in love on many occasions, and continue to be. But,these superstars won't listen to their peers. Therefore, as Jesus said, "That which you have been doing in secret will be shouted from the roof-tops." Since they will not listen to, nor come under the authority of the church or a group of Elders,God must deal with them through the lower authority of civil government, which Paul tells us God Himself has set up. The apostle Paul tels us that Christians ARE under the authority of the civil government, as long as man's laws do not come against God's Word. Then we have the right to follow the Word, over the civil government law, and only then. My question is; Why be in any way afraid? I fill out my taxes every year and have no problem opening the books of the church I pastor to anyone at anytime. Why? Because, I have nothing to hide. If you have nothing to hide, don't worry about it, open it up for all to see now, and be justified. Instead of putting curses (Strictly forbidden by the Word) in a demonic sounding voice on anyone with a question about "your" ministry. I always thought it was God's not "your's". I guarantee you that God will make sure it ALL comes out if you have been dealing wrongly with "His" people. Get back to preaching Christ and Him crucified and get off all this self-help garbage. I am praying for you all to repent, if you are wrong. Or, to be justified in the eyes of all men, if you truly have done nothing for which to be ashamed. What helps us all to know is that one day we will ALL stand before Christ. And at that time we can explain it all to Him.

My God, this is all over CNN. It seems too good to be true.
Many years ago, I happened to rent a documentary called MARJOE, which I'm sure all who come to this blog are familiar with. It started a fascination with evangelists, TV evangelists in particular, that would ride me for a very long time. I watched them whenever I could. Not one friend shared my appreciation of these sleek, strutting con men, so I was all alone in my obsession. No one appreciated the over the top rock star antics of Jimmy Swaggert, the naked, oily, greed and absurdity of Robert Tilton or the sheer gone-down-the-road weirdness of Benny Hinn. To me, it was better than standup comedy. And when one of them went down in flames--as Swagger did--nobody laughed harder than I did. These guys were *funny* as hell.
One day I learned that one of my Mom's employees, who was ill with cancer, dutifully pledged much of his salary to some ministry, I'm not sure which one. When we tried to reason with him about this, it was no good. Clearly, he believed with all his might that tithing would make a difference in the outcome of his illness.
Suddenly, TV evangelists weren't so funny anymore. Gradually a sense of rage started to creep in whenever I caught one of these liars, usually late at night, and they became just one more example of the fact that there is no justice in life. I'm just a poor old agnostic that doesn't claim to know anything, but I do know that these men are the lowest of the low. Cheating people in the name of Jesus, in the name God, using the bible to JUSTIFY your thievery. . .it just doesn't get any worse than that.
In 1999 I discovered The Door, and learned about The Trinity Foundation, and it seemed to me this group had gotten the concept of Christianity right. Then I learned that it was also a watch dog organization for these asshats, and man, I thought that was the greatest thing in the world. I bought the tapes, I caught Ole Anthony whenever I could on TV and in magazines, newspapers, etc. All the while hoping some turning point would come.
I don't know if this is the turning point I was waiting for, but as I watch this story cycle around and around on CNN I'm thinking OK, I guess there is a God.

Grassley is so safe in Iowa, he has no worries and can afford to do what's right. There's no one as conscientous in Washington as him. He even voted against the first Iraq war as one of only two Republicans. He's the real deal.

The next thing I remember is running out of that church yelling, Praise the Lord.... Well. When I see my little brother, not oftenn, he's in an old foklks home in Louisiana, First thing, I say. Curtis show me that ankle. He pulls off his socks and shoes, both feet, holds them up for me to see, and with his soft voice and little smile. he ask which one? They are both perfect. There's no big hole in the ankle anymore. And that's what God uses men like that converted from Pharisee Judaism to Christianity, does as a conduit of God's blessings. If he didn't publicly pray, and not much,,,"speak it into being" as God says, these people blessed by God would not be blessed. Pray is exercizing your Faith "in the name of Jesus. Those long winded Pharisees Jesus was speaking about were not beleivers, had no power to heal "in the name of Jesus". These 'men' were LIARS in the image of the great liar. At His death, all of these powers of God became to powers of Christians to be used, to claim healings, blessings, Victory over Satan and his sons "in the name of Jesus. Lord. Messiah.
Some Christians are a little human, like there cousins the Jews, a mite greedy, but they don't have to be. God made them Masters over His whole Kingdom on earth. Put them in charge of everything. And, I don't recall Him telling them that they could not wear a little gold, a diamond, or drive a Cadilac. He said, I give it all to you. Take care of it and all life. Use it wisely. But, as God says to His sons. All of ya are bad. Ain't one of you any good. Accept Jesus as Saviour and keep up on the repenting. I know you are all sinners.
